About Us & Bio

Our Mission at Off-Grid Capital Advisors is to help commercial property owners profitably retrofit their properties with the latest technologies to dramatically reduce electricity, gas & water utility costs and/or increase building resiliency (seismic & wildfire, etc.).  Where possible, we identify ways to incorporate the highest efficiency solar panels into a retrofit plan.  We target 60% to as high as 100% reductions in utility costs, through a combination of solar production and energy/water efficiency savings.

Off-Grid Capital Advisors helps develop such retrofit strategies, structures financing solutions including direct loans, PACE, PPAs, operating leases and others to fund them, and serves as project manager to implement them. 

Solar & Battery Storage:
For Solar Projects, we work with, and help property owners select, the best & most competitively priced contractors in the U.S., and also access the lowest cost financing.  

Given the tragic impacts from recent California wildfires, Off-Grid Capital Advisors encourages clients to evaluate robust battery storage options to help make their properties resilient against electrical grid power outages.  As such, we model solar & battery storage systems that are designed to be Non-Export, meaning in the event of a power outage, the solar system continues to operate and supply power to the property.

Robert Johnson, Jr., President of Off-Grid Capital Advisors

Robert is a commercial real estate industry veteran with over 25 years of investment management, asset management and development experience.

Additionally, over the last several years he has worked on industry leading projects with several of the nation's largest commercial PACE platforms and financing firms as well as some of the largest solar contractors and energy engineering firms.

His real estate experience includes serving as a Portfolio Manager and Senior Vice President with AMB Capital Partners (now Prologis), where he ran private REIT funds exceeding $1 billion in capitalization; Head of Financial Management at ABKB Realty Advisors (now LaSalle Investment Management), ​where he ran the national analysts team that supported asset and portfolio management, as well as co-asset managed a large, national industrial portfolio, and Kenneth Leventhal & Company (now part of the Ernst & Young Real Estate Group), where he was a Manager in the consulting division and worked on prominent engagements such as the 1990s S&L crisis, Security Pacific-BofA bank merger and financial feasibility studies for master-planned communities and portfolio acquisition due diligence services for various investment banking firms.

His experience also includes mergers & acquisition work and property development with Catellus Development.  Robert started his career at KPMG, where he worked as an auditor and CPA.  He continues to serve as an advisor to Institutional Real Estate, Inc. (IREI) on sales and marketing strategy and implementation related to IREI’s real estate investment management conferences, focusing on pension funds, endowments, foundations and other institutional investor relations.

Robert’s latest article, “Keeping PACE: Property-assessed clean energy financing is a game changer for commercial real estate,” recently appeared in the March 2018 issue of The Institutional Real Estate Letter, Americas. This was the latest in a number of white papers related to real estate and infrastructure investments that he has published.
